The second day of play at the ninth annual ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony – a $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit clay court event - saw the end of qualifying and the official start of the main singles and doubles tournaments.
Over nearly nine hours on four clay courts, 38 players from 11 countries competed in eight singles qualifying matches, five main draw singles contests and three main draw doubles duels.
In the main draw singles opening day Round 1 play, all of the seeded players advanced. The seeded player with the toughest road to Round 2, No. 6 American Sophie Chang needed three sets to dispatch American Jessica Livianu 6-7(6) 6-4 6-0. No. 4 Australian Belinda Wilcox, the highest seed competing Tuesday, bested American Pamela Montez in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. No. 7 Dea Herdzelas, of Bosnia/Herzegovina, beat Mexican Andrea Renee Villarreal 6-1 6-0.
Countries represented on court in today’s matches were The United States of America, Canada, Bulgaria, Georgia, Australia, Peru, Mexico, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Switzerland, Ukraine and Russia.
Again sponsored by ResortQuest, as well as the United States Tennis Association (USTA), UBS Financial and the Sea Colony community, this singles and doubles tournament runs through Sunday, draws nationally- and internationally-ranked women tennis players seeking world ranking points and a share of the event’s prize money.
Wednesday’s play begins at 9 a.m. and features 11 first round singles and five first round doubles matches. Admission is free and the public is invited.
