A double dose of qualifying on Day 2 of the ResortQuest Pro Women's Open at Sea Colony

In a day packed with 38 singles and two doubles qualifying matches at the eighth annual ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony, American Rachel Lim knocked off the highest seeded player, dropping No. 7 South African Zoe Kruger 6-3, 6-4. Qualifying ends tomorrow morning followed by the first round of singles and doubles main draw play. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Mother Nature nixed yesterday’s planned kick-off for the eighth annual ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony – a $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit clay court event. Herculean early morning efforts by the Sea Colony’s grounds crew culminated in a dozen resort courts ready for the today’s double dose of qualifying matches. Over nine hours Monday, 54 players from 11 countries competed in 38 first and second round qualifying singles matches, each hoping to secure a place in Tuesday morning’s final eight qualifying matches. Nine of today’s matches were decided in three sets.

Twelve of the sixteen seeded players moved on to tomorrow’s qualifying finals. American Rachel Lim toppled the highest seed, knocking off No. 7 South African Zoe Kruger 6-3, 6-4. American Nicole Hammond beat No. 9 Canadian Catherine Leduc 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. In the last singles qualifier to finish today (a battle of Americans), Jessica Livianu bested No. 13 Andie K. Daniell 6-4, 7-6(4). While four seeds failed to advance to the qualifying finals, only No. 16 Joelle Kissell lost in the day’s first round, dropping a nearly three-hour three-setter to Alycia Parks 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles qualifying, just two matches were needed to the final two squads for the tournament’s main doubles draw. In a duel of American duets, Payton Andrews and Gail Brodsky needed three sets to oust Sarah Candeloro and Erika Synoski 6-3, 1-6, 10-7, while Mexican Amanda Carolina Nava Elkin and American partner Gianna Pielet dispatched the American pair of Audrey Ann Blakely and Candace Olivia Pedro in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

The countries represented in qualifying matches today were: The United States, Canada, Mexico, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia, The Republic of South Africa and Australia.

Tuesday’s action kicks off at 9 a.m. with the qualifying finals, followed by the first round of singles and doubles main draw play. Admission is free and the public is invited.
