Sixteen women entered Thursday’s singles second round at the eighth annual ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony (PWO), but just eight – a Romanian and seven Americans - ended the day still with a chance to claim the crown and the winner’s share of the $25,000 purse and ranking points at the USTA Pro Circuit event.
In the upset of the day, qualifier Romanian Gabriela Talaba beat fourth-seeded Shilin Xu of China in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. Australian qualifier Elysia Bolton tested second-seeded American Ashley Kratzer in the day’s only singles three setter, but dropped the last two sets after claiming the first - 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. In somewhat of a throw-back match for the resort event, singles play kicked off this morning with third-seeded American Katerina Stewart – the 2014 PWO singles champion – advancing to the quarterfinals with a win over American qualifier Alexa Graham – a 2015 PWO finalist – 6-1, 7-5.
The eight women who failed to advance today earned $392 and five ranking points.
In the doubles quarterfinals, the only seeded team remaining moved on to the semifinals when the second-seeded American duo of Quinn Gleason and Sanaz Marand (a 2012 PWO singles finalist and 2012 doubles champion, with partner Jacqueline Cako) defeated the team of American Felicity Maltby and Talaba. All eight of the remaining doubles players are Americans.
The singles quarterfinal matches kick off tomorrow at 9 a.m. on courts 20 and 23, followed by the doubles semifinals.
The public is invited and admission is free.
