Day 4: Singles Round of 16 and Doubles Quarterfinals play whittles the field in the 8th ResortQuest

In the last and the most competitive match of Wednesday’s Singles Round 1 play, American qualifier Elysia Bolton beat fellow American Quinn Gleason in 29 games over three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the eighth annual ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony. Play resumes on the resort’s clay courts at 9 a.m. with the singles Round of 16 followed by the doubles quarterfinals. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Thirty-two women started the the eighth annual ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open with dreams of a title, money and ranking points. When play concluded late Wednesday afternoon, half of them headed home … with $228 and one point. After nearly eight hours of competition on the resort’s clay courts, only the victors will continue their quest for the singles championship, the winner’s share of the USTA Pro Circuit event’s $25,000 purse and, most importantly, 50 ranking points. Countries still represented in the singles main draw are Brazil, China, Moldova, Romania and the United States (with 12 players).

Only two of today’s singles opening round matches were decided in decisive third sets, including the session’s last and most competitive match featuring American qualifier Elysia Bolton’s 29-game, three-set victory over fellow American Quinn Gleason 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Thursday morning’s singles second round features four qualifiers and two wild cards. All of the seeded players competing Wednesday advanced.

In the final five opening round doubles matches, three seeded teams failed to earn a spot in Thursday’s quarterfinals. The America pair of Robin Anderson and Maegan Manasse booted the top seeded duo of American Usue Maitane Arconada and Brazilian Luisa Stefani 6-4, 6-3. The American tandem of Andie K. Daniell and Amanda Rogers needed three sets to topple the third seeded team of Chieh-Yu Hsu of Chinese Taipei and Russian Nika Kukharchuck 6-4, 6-7(2), 10-7. The fourth-seeded international squad of Australian Genevieve Lorbergs and Shilin Xu of China were bested by Americans Brynn Boren and Caitlin Whorisky 7-5, 6-3.

Singles Round of 16 matches start tomorrow at 9 a.m. on courts 20, 21 and 23, followed by the doubles quarterfinals.

The public is invited and admission is free.
