By the end of Day 4 in the ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony – a $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit clay court event – just eight women from five countries on three continents still have the chance to claim the resort tournament’s ninth singles crown.
Over nine and a half hours, 14 matches – eight singles and six doubles – cut the field in half for each of the draws.
Two of the six seeded players competing today’s Round of 16 failed to advance to the quarterfinals.
Earning the day’s top upset victory, Switzerland’s Tess Sugnaux ousted fifth-seeded Slovakian Tereza Mihalikova 6-4 6-2. American Natasha Subhash downed fellow American No. 8 Sanaz Marand 6-3 6-2.
Just two of today’s eight singles contests ended in decisive third sets.
In one of those three setters, 2014 winner American Katerina Stewart continued her quest to etch her name into history as the event’s only two-time singles champion with her three-set victory over fellow American Katherine Fahey 3-6 6-3 6-3.
All three seeded doubles team advanced to Friday’s semifinals.
In notable quarterfinals doubles action, 2016 title holders and second-seeded American Sophie Chang and Alexandra Mueller dispatched Canadian Petra Januskova and American Connie Ma 6-2 6-1 in their latest attempt to be the event’s only two-time doubles champions.
Countries represented on the clay courts today were The United States of America, Canada, Bulgaria, Australia, Peru, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Russia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.
Again sponsored by ResortQuest, as well as the United States Tennis Association (USTA), UBS Financial and the Sea Colony community, this singles and doubles tournament runs through Sunday, draws nationally- and internationally-ranked women tennis players seeking world ranking points and a share of the event’s prize money.
Friday’s matches begin at 10 a.m. and features the singles quarterfinals, followed by the doubles semifinals. Admission is free and the public is invited.
