Day 3 - Singles & Doubles Main Draw - 9th ResortQuest Pro Women's Open at Sea Colony

June 5, 2019

With the final two of 16 scheduled matches still on court, lightning and rain brought Day 3 of the ninth annual ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony – a $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit clay court event – to an early end.

All 11 remaining singles first round matches and three of the five doubles opening round contests were complete prior to suspension of play, leaving just two matches unfinished.

Three of the five seeded players competing today advanced to the Round of 16.

Fifteen-year-old American qualifier Connie Ma (pictured) toppled No. 3 Hungarian Panna Udvardy in straight sets 6-1 7-5. American Maria Mateas retired in the third set of her match against American Katerina Stewart, this event’s 2014 champion. Top seed Usue Maitane Arconada bested Bulgarian Gergana Topalova 6-4 6-3. Fifth-seeded Slovakian Tereza Mihalikova beat American qualifier Tori Kinard 2-6 6-1 7-5. No. 8 Sanaz Marand earned a straight set victory over Peruvian qualifier Dominique Schaefer 6-2 6-2.

Five of today’s 11 singles matches ended in three sets. In the longest officially-timed match in tournament history, Bulgarian qualifier Petia Arshinkova needed more than four hours (4 hours and 11 minutes to be precise) and three sets (each ending in a tiebreaker) to best American qualifier Peyton Stearns 6-7(6) 7-6(11) 7-6(4).

In notable first round doubles play, the second-seeded American tandem of Sophie Chang and Alexandra Mueller (the event’s 2016 champions) dispatched fellow Americans Mary Closs and Haley Giavara in three sets 6-2 4-6 10-3 to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinal round.

Countries represented on court today were The United States of America, Canada, Bulgaria, Australia, Peru, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Russia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Russia.

Again sponsored by ResortQuest, as well as the United States Tennis Association (USTA), UBS Financial and the Sea Colony community, this singles and doubles tournament runs through Sunday, draws nationally- and internationally-ranked women tennis players seeking world ranking points and a share of the event’s prize money.

Thursday’s play begins at 10 a.m. and features the singles Round of 16, followed by the two weather-delayed first round doubles contests and the doubles quarterfinals. Admission is free and the public is invited.
