Day 1 - Singles Qualifying - 9th ResortQuest Pro Women's Open at Sea Colony

In stark contrast to last year’s opening day washout, blue skies and sunshine provided a perfect playing conditions for Day 1 at the ninth annual ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony – a $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit clay court event. In just less than three hours on eight clay courts this morning, 32 players from seven countries competed in 16 opening round singles qualifying contests, each hoping to advance to Tuesday morning’s final eight qualifying matches.

There were no upsets today as all sixteen seeded players moved on to tomorrow morning’s qualifying finals.

Four of today’s matches ended in three sets.

In the day’s longest match, 13th seed American Haley Giavara (pictured) needed three sets to dispatch Canadian Louise Kwong 6-3 5-7 10-7.

After losing the first set, No, 15 Alexandra Osborne won the next two over American Emerald Able for the 4-6 6-3 10-6 three-set victory. Dominique Schaefer, the third seed and lone South American in the qualifying tournament, beat American Fiona Crawley 6-2 4-6 10-3. In a match of Americans, ninth seeded American Brynn Boren won 3-6 6-0 10-0 over Gianna Pielet.

The countries represented in qualifying matches today were The United States of America, Canada, Bulgaria, Georgia, Australia, Peru and Russia.

Again sponsored by ResortQuest, as well as the United States Tennis Association (USTA), UBS Financial and the Sea Colony community, this singles and doubles tournament runs through Sunday, draws nationally- and internationally-ranked women tennis players seeking world ranking points and a share of the event’s prize money.

Tuesday’s action kicks off at 9 a.m. with the qualifying finals, followed by the first round of singles and doubles main draw play. Admission is free and the public is invited.
