Qualifying is complete and one of the 32 woman now in the singles main draw will emerge on Sunday as the eighth champion of the ResortQuest Pro Women’s Open at Sea Colony – a USTA Pro Circuit event. The winners of this morning’s final eight singles qualifying matches join an international field that now includes players from Australia, Brazil, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Romania and the United States. Players in this clay court event are competing for a share of the $25,000 in prize money and, perhaps most importantly, ranking points.
Seven of today’s eight singles qualifying finals were decided in straight sets. Only the epic contest on Court 20 between No. 13 Georgian Salome Devidze and No. 3 American Kana Daniel reached the third and decisive set, with Devidze emerging victorious 5-7, 7-6(8), 7-5 after four hours and 16 minutes on court – believed to be the longest match in tournament history.
In singles main draw opening round play, all five matches were decided in straight sets. The upset of the day was unseeded American Raveena Kingsley, making quick work of No. 7 Colombian Emiliana Arango 6-1, 6-1. Top-seeded American Grace Min advanced to the second round with her win over Russian Nika Kukharchuck 6-4, 6-0.
In the doubles tournament’s opening round, the second seeded American duo of Quinn Gleason and Sanaz Marand (half of the 2012 championship team with partner Jacqualine Cako) dropped fellow Americans Mary Closs and Shelby Talcott 6-2, 6-2. The remaining two doubles first round matches were decided in 10-point tiebreakers.
Wednesday’s play features 16 matches - the remaining 11 first round singles matches and five doubles contests. Play starts at 9 a.m.
